Mariah Carey receives Global Impact Grammy award

Mariah Carey kicked of black history month looking absolutely stunning receiving her Global Impact Grammy Award tonight, presented by The Black Music Creative. To help present the Award, Mariah’s personal inspiration Stevie Wonder serenaded the honoree with a performance of his song “All I Do.” After Wonder practically stole the show, he then gave a kind hearted speech before Mariah made her way on stage.

Stevie shared his heart with Mariah by saying ,”I love you and that’s going to be forever. Every time we talk on the phone or I see you,” Wonder said as the audience made noise, “and we meet up and talk about music…You think I’m going to say, ‘Every time I hear you?’The audience erupted in laughter. “I can see her, OK, in spirit.”

She accepted the awarded in a Haute Couture Schiaperelli gown and made a few jokes during her speech. Mariah didn’t hesitate to add a little shade to The Grammys by asking if her award counted as a ‘real grammy’ because it’s been “soooo long” since she’s seen one.

Carey joked while holding her award, “Is this a real Grammy? I haven’t seen one in soooooo long, It’s weird. I don’t know. We’ll figure out what this is later.”

She then added, “When I first started in the music business, I was often told to conform to certain expectations. I was not encouraged to focus on my love for Black music. It took countless arguments, endless tantrums — I’ll call them tantrums — and mostly unwavering determination but, eventually, I was able to reveal my authentic self, as they say, and create music that came from my heart. In doing so, I discovered a newfound sense of freedom and fulfillment, I accept this award on behalf of every person who has ever felt silenced or marginalized, who has ever been told their voice doesn’t matter. Your truth matters,” she added. “We will continue to pave the way together for a future where authenticity is celebrated, diversity is embraced, and music has the power to change the world”

Her speech was followed by a few musical tributes, the first being Baby Face who sang “Every Time I Close My Eyes” and “When You Believe”. Yolanda Adam’s brought down the house with her gospel infused version of “Make It Happen.” And the last performance was from Tori Kelly, who performed “Vision Of Love.” Busta Rhymes also performed a few songs, one of which being a little tease of his collaboration with Mariah, “I Know What You Want.” Check our other posts for those photos and videos..
