Tori Kelly praises The Emancipation of Mimi in new interview

Fellow lamb and super star Tori Kelly took a moment out of her busy schedule of promoting her new self titled album to speak to Mary Siorky at Consequences, and didn’t shy at the chance to lamb out over Mariah Carey! In this interview, Tori picked 10 albums from the 2000s that helped shape the sound of her new album and her musical Identity. After including Mary Mary and Beyoncé, the young songstress added Mariah Carey’s legendary The Emancipation of Mimi to her list of major influences.

She said about adding this album to her list, “This was another defining album for me. Mariah had been Mariah at this point, so she didn’t have anything to prove, but in my memory, this album was sort of a comeback for her. “We Belong Together” and “Shake It Off” came out and they were so fun, but then I dug into the album and there’s songs on here that are so vocally challenging. I’ll still put it on and see if I can hit some of the notes. “Circles” is one of my favorite songs of hers ever.”
