Rolling Stone ranks the 100 Greatest R&B songs of the 21st Century

Rolling stone has shared a new article ranking their Best R&B songs of the 21st Century. You know Mariah Carey had to be included, despite any past animosity that Rolling Stone has seemed to have towards the Songbird, her talent and impact are truly undeniable. In this list, Mariah’s signature hit song “We Belong Together” is listed as the 5th best R&B song, sitting right above Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” at #6 and behind Mary J Blige’s 2005 hit “Be Without You.” The writer of this article doesn’t seem to show much knowledge about the song, as they incorrectly analyze her use of “whistle notes” , which lambs would know were never included in the 2000’s Song of The Decade. The article is still very complimentary, despite this being Mariah’s only song on the list, and Rolling Stone slightly dipping a toe into their own bias.

Rolling Stone,

“Although Mariah Carey ruled the pop landscape in the Nineties, she’d had a series of full-length misfires at the beginning of 2000s. he needed a hit, and with 2005’s “We Belong Together,” she earned her first Number One in five years. The longing ballad, featured on Carey’s 10th studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, is a sweeping plea to an ex-lover and a sweeping survey of the devastation left in the wake of heartbreak. At its core, “We Belong Together” is a warm R&B piano ballad elevated by Carey’s five-octave range. “Baby/When you left I lost a part of me (together)/It’s still so hard to believe (come back, come back)/Come back, baby, please (come back, come back)/’Cause we belong together,” Carey sings with her signature whistle note. The result is one of the most beloved songs from one of pop’s greatest voices.”
